Certifications

Examination Policy

How AAAI certification assessments are delivered, monitored and graded across the pathway. Specific exam details for each certification are shown on its course page.

Our approach

Assessment matched to the credential

AAAI uses different assessment models across the pathway. The depth of assessment and the integrity measures applied increase with the level of the credential, so each certification is verified in a way that is proportionate to what it represents.

Foundational

End-of-course knowledge check

Foundational certifications are assessed through an open-book knowledge check completed at the end of the course. This confirms understanding of the material and is completion-based, without separate proctoring.

AI Core and variants
Intermediate and above

Final semi-proctored exam

Higher certifications are assessed through a separate final exam, delivered online under browser lockdown with automated safeguards and reviewed by AAAI after submission. The policy below applies to exams of this type.

AI Professional Foundations and above

Integrity measures are applied in proportion to each credential. Current exams use automated safeguards and review rather than webcam invigilation or the collection of identity documents, which keeps the process straightforward and privacy-conscious. More advanced certifications may introduce additional verification as the pathway develops.

During the exam

Exam rules and integrity

Proctored exams are delivered with built-in safeguards to keep them fair and consistent for every candidate. The following apply for the full duration of the exam.

Fixed time limit

Once started, the timer runs continuously and does not pause.

Randomised questions

Questions and answer options are randomised, so no two exams are the same.

Copy and paste disabled

Copy, paste and right-click functions are blocked throughout the exam.

Browser lockdown

The exam runs in fullscreen. You cannot leave the exam window until you submit.

Answer every question

Unanswered questions are submitted automatically, so attempt all of them.

Post-submission review

Each attempt is reviewed by AAAI to confirm the rules were followed before the result is confirmed.

What counts as a breach

  • Exiting fullscreen mode during the exam
  • Using an additional monitor or screen
  • Opening another browser tab or leaving the exam window
  • Attempting to refresh, leave, or switch to another application

A breach is flagged as possible misconduct and may end your exam. If an attempt breaches the rules, it is disqualified and recorded as a fail.

After the exam

Results, re-sits and fees

01

Your result

Once AAAI has reviewed your attempt and confirmed the rules were followed, your result is confirmed. A passing result earns the certification digital badge.

02

One free re-sit

If you do not pass, a free re-sit is available 48 hours after your attempt. The number of attempts included is shown on each certification page.

03

Further attempts

Any attempts beyond those included are charged at $100 including GST per attempt.

Before you sit

System requirements

For the best experience, prepare your setup before you begin. A proctored exam cannot pause once started.

A desktop or laptop computer, not a mobile device or tablet
A single screen only. Additional monitors will flag the attempt
An up-to-date web browser
A stable internet connection for the full duration

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Are AAAI exams proctored?

AAAI matches assessment integrity to the level of each credential. Foundational certifications such as AI Core use a completion-based, open-book knowledge check. Higher certifications are assessed by a semi-proctored exam: it runs under browser lockdown with automated safeguards during the exam, and every attempt is reviewed by AAAI afterwards, rather than being watched by a live invigilator.

Are AAAI exams open-book?

It depends on the certification level. Foundational certifications such as AI Core use a completion-based, open-book knowledge check — reference materials are permitted. Higher certifications (AI Professional Foundations and above) are closed-book exams. Notes, printed materials, and AI tools are not permitted during the exam. The browser lockdown enforces this: copy, paste, right-click, and tab-switching are all disabled for the duration.

Do I need a webcam or to provide identification?

No. AAAI exams do not currently require a webcam or identity documents. Integrity is maintained through browser lockdown, randomised questions, and post-submission review. Verification is applied in proportion to each credential level, and more advanced certifications may introduce additional measures as the pathway develops.

What happens if I do not pass?

If you do not pass, you are entitled to one free re-sit, available 48 hours after your attempt. Any further attempts are charged at $100 including GST per attempt. The number of attempts included with a certification is shown on its course page.

How and when do I receive my result?

Your result is confirmed once AAAI has reviewed your attempt to verify that the exam rules were followed. On a successful result you receive the certification digital badge. If an attempt breaches the exam rules, it is disqualified and recorded as a fail.
